Ofsted Intranet Re-engineering Document (Excerpt)
Oftsed once stood for the "Office for Standards in Education". However, Ofsted's remit has rapidly expanded and it is now the main body responsible for inspecting schools, colleges, childcare, social care and much more. Ofsted also boasts one of the governments most popular websites - receiving roughly 60,000 unique visits every day from parents, carers, local government and education professionals.
I led several important user experience projects for Ofsted between 2002 and 2006. These included:
- Design on two generations of the website (2002 and 2006)
- User research and UX strategy for Ofsted's massive intranet
- Information architecture of the 2006 website
Some highlights:
- Worked with senior management to define the strategic direction of the website
- Provided user advocacy at to the board and steering committee
- Pitched at board level and defended the account in commercial tenders several times
- Led a team of freelance information architects and researchers
- Conducted user research, ran workshops and gathered user requirements
- Built consensus across the organization
- Project managed the build of the first website, and delivered on time and on budget
The website won Best Corporate Website in the 2003 UK e-Government Forum Awards
